Favorite yoga poses for recovery

While I love high-intensity workouts, the kind of yoga I prefer is actually the slow, gentle, restorative kind. I have taken (and enjoyed) 60-minute hot yoga sessions where I do get in a decent workout (and sweat a lot), but it’s not my go-to workout of choice.

When I’m drawn to yoga, it’s usually because I am sore, tight and in need of a good, gentle stretch. Sometimes that’s a video (like my go-to slow stretch one) and sometimes it’s me going through a few of my favorite poses in the evening to wind down.

This recovery-focused kind of yoga is on my mind right now because I’m still sore from Monday’s Rise Nation class. I thought I’d share a few of my favorite yoga poses for recovery:

  • Downward-facing dog: A classic. I like that it stretches almost everything, especially my calf muscles as they tend to be very tight.

  • Pigeon: A great one for tight hips, another common ailment for me.
  • Reverse Warrior
  • Lizard: More hip work
  • Standing Forward Bend: Intense but offers good release
  • Wide-Legged Forward Bend w/shoulder stretch:
  • Happy Baby
  • Child’s Pose
